About Longyearbyen
With approximately 2,000 inhabitants, Longyearbyen is Svalbard‘s largest settlement and administrative centre. As the only incorporated town on the Svalbard archipelago, Longyearbyen features all the trappings of a modern community: a hospital, primary and secondary school, university, sports centre with swimming pool, library, culture centre, cinema, bank, airport, and a small variety of museums, shops, restaurants, and hotels.
One of the world's northernmost towns, Longyearbyen is situated on the western coast of Spitsbergen, the largest island of the Svalbard archipelago, on the southern edge of Adventfjorden, a fjord which continues inland to the beautiful valley of Adventdalen. Owing to its location far north of the Arctic Circle, Longyearbyen is in polar night from October 28th to February 14th, and in polar day from April 19th to August 23rd.
