Packing tips for Svalbard visitors

Arctic weather conditions in Svalbard can change quickly and often, so all travellers should bring warm, weather-resistant outerwear along with thermal layers and good walking boots no matter the season.

We recommend bringing the following items:
• thick woollen socks, ideally several pairs
• woollen underwear & base layers
• warm woollen sweater
• thin woollen or fleece gloves (ideal as a base layer under snowmobile gloves)
• warm gloves, scarf, and cap
• windproof/waterproof jacket and trousers (insulated for spring/winter travel)
• good hiking boots (preferably insulated for spring/winter travel)
• thick moisturizer
• camera with extra battery
• binoculars (ideal for polar cruises and hiking & nature tours)
• sun glasses & sunscreen cream (for spring/summer travel)

Additionally, for those travelling outside of Longyearbyen, we recommend:
• small backpack/rucksack
• travel towel & travel-size toiletries
• water bottle
• fleece jacket
• heat pads for hands and feet

A list of necessary personal equipment will be provided by your Nordic Visitor travel consultant before your trip. Additional outerwear and safety gear will also be provided locally for outdoor activities such as snowmobiling, dog-sledding, or ice cave tours.
