See how the arctic sparkles under polar night

Svalbard´s Polar Nights make for a truly magical winter experience! By the end of October, the sun has cast its final rays and Svalbard enters into a period of darkness. But not to fear—the glow of the moon and stars reflecting off the snow means you may not even need a head lamp as you travel by dog sled and snowmobile over the frozen landscapes. And if conditions are right, your adventures may be accompanied by brilliant displays of the northern lights!

  • Day 1: Welcome to the Arctic!

Arrive at Longyear Airport in Svalbard followed by a shuttle transfer to your accommodation for the next 3 nights in central Longyearbyen . The rest of your day is free to explore the town as you wish, perhaps with a visit to the Svalbard Museum to learn more about Svalbard‘s history as a hunting and mining outpost or a visit to the local shops. Dinner is also up to you this evening though we recommend the charming Restaurant Kroa.

  • Day 2: Northern Lights Husky Safari

After breakfast, your guide picks you up and takes you to the Basecamp Trapper’s Station, where 90 Alaskan huskies eagerly await to take you on a thrilling sled ride under the stars and northern lights.* After a brief lesson from the lead musher, the reins are yours and the journey begins! With only the sounds of the dogs and the scraping of the sled against the ice, this is sure to be an experience to remember. Back at the kennel, un-harness your hard-working dogs and enjoy a hot beverage and light snack at the Trapper’s Station before returning to Longyearbyen in the afternoon. This evening, reward your efforts with a mouth-watering feast! We recommend the 4-course Arctic dinner at the legendary Huset Restaurant.

    * Please note that the northern lights (aurora borealis) are a natural phenomenon and sightings cannot be guaranteed.

  • Day 3: Snowmobile Safari in the Arctic Wilderness

Enjoy a good breakfast and meet with your guide at the hotel for your next adventure: a thrilling snowmobile adventure. After a basic driving lesson, it’s time to suit up and take off into the wild! This amazing journey takes you over the Longyearbreen glacier, which offers extraordinary views over Longyearbyen. The tour guide then leads you through the valley of Fardalen to the plains at Colessletta, where reindeer are often spotted. Finally, the route takes you through the valleys of Bødalen and Todalen and further to Bolterdalen before returning to Longyearbyen. Back in town, enjoy a delicious dinner at a restaurant of your choice and make the most of your last night near the North Pole!

Environmental protection and tourism in Svalbard:
“You are welcome to return to Svalbard when no one has noticed you’ve already been here.” Svalbard’s vegetation is very exposed, particularly due to the permafrost, and destruction of flora can leave a lasting scar on the landscape. All vegetation is therefore protected and all traces of human activity up to 1945 are regarded as cultural monuments. Svalbard’s Environmental Act strictly regulates travel on Svalbard, so if you are planning a trip alone outside of Administration Area 10 (central parts of Spitsbergen), you must inform the Ombudsman and show proof of insurance.
Polar bears and visitor safety in Svalbard:
The polar bear is probably the foremost symbol of Svalbard’s wildlife and it is a truly exhilarating experience to see them in their natural habitat. Keep in mind that Svalbard prohibits coaxing, pursuing, or disturbing polar bears in such a way that endangers humans or the bears themselves. Attacks on humans, though rare, can be lethal. Therefore, on all guided tours and activities, visitor safety is overseen by experienced guides who carry shotguns at all times and let off warning shots if needed. The authorities in Svalbard, together with the joint travel industry, encourage participation in organised, guided activities in order to protect both visitors and polar bears.
